Review

"The knowledge of God--theology--is like dawn for the human heart. Lambert wakes us up early and takes us outside to see this light flood the landscape of human life. A fine overview of how key Christian doctrines relate to counseling, this book will be on my required reading list."-Jeremy Pierre, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biblical Counseling& Chair of the Department of Biblical Counseling and Family Ministry, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary"I thank God for Heath Lambert and this book. Heath has ministered biblical counseling to me personally, to my family, and to the church I serve as a pastor. I praise God that more people than can encounter Heath face to face will have the benefit of his ministry through this book."-Dr. James M Hamilton, Jr., Professor of Biblical Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological SeminaryHeath Lambert nailed it: counseling is a theological discipline. He demonstrates this simple, profound truth and shows the application of a dozen doctrines to the ministry of counseling. Let Christian theology--"the queen of the sciences"--reign in the realm of personal ministry, and let this book serve as an escort. -Robert D. Jones, Author, Uprooting Anger and Pursuing Peace; Counseling Professor, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Everybody is a theologian, atheist, deist, Christian, and anybody else. And what you believe about God and mankind in relationship to God will be evident in every area of life. And nowhere should theology be more evident than when we are counseling people through trials and difficulties in life. The dividing line between Biblical counseling and all others theology. Sadly many Christians have jettisoned their theology to allow the "professionals" (with a deficient, many times anti-BIblical theology) to counsel in many of the areas where the Bible speaks most powerfully and the Spirit loves to most exact change. Biblical counseling movement has sought to change this, and in my experience has done a great job. Yet a thorough theology of the mature field of biblical theology has thus far been relatively lacking. Lambert does a great job in filling that void with this book, that will serve as a textbook in many college and seminary classes, but just as easily is a must read for any pastor, church leader, and person who wants to effectively bear another's burdens in a biblical manner.Lambert methodically walks through various areas of theology and their implications, or more precisely their role in laying the foundations, for Biblical Counseling. This is not a small book, but could have been much larger. I appreciate the depth that Lambert chose. He is thorough without being exhaustive, and he writes in a way that is accessible, yet will engage and challenge academia.I will avoid summarizing the contents in this review. Suffice it to say, I cannot recommend this book more highly than I do. Must buy!

If you are thinking that this is just a dry treatise on the theological underpinnings of biblical counseling you are wrong. Through real-life stories Lambert leverages the practical nature of applying biblical concepts to the challenges all of us face in life. That is why this book is deeply practical for Christians at every point in their walk. Chances are you've been given a fair amount of advice along your Christian journey, some bad, some good. How can you weigh the value of such advice? Making sure you are grounded in an understanding of who you are, who God is, and what the challenges of life are all about, is a start, and this book delivers.Over the years we've all been Dobsoned to believe that counseling is something that can only be done by Christians wearing special gloves. This book restores counseling to it's rightful domain, and does so decisively. All practitioners, whether Christian or not, will eventually need to reconcile where they stand on the basis of this book. All Christians, whether practitioners or not, will need to understand how much ground they've yielded to other sources of proposed healing, comfort, and help." The goal of this book is not merely that counselors care about theology, but that theologians care about counseling".I would say Lambert accomplished his goal quite well.

This book serves to lay the theological foundation of why we do biblical counseling while giving practical insight on how these truths practically play out. This is a great starting point for education in biblical counseling and an ideal precursor to another great biblical counseling book, Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands.Edit in response to other reviews: Lambert does not state psychologists only come to false conclusions. He simply states that what true insights they have spring from biblical truth into their own constructs. Biblical counsellors do not feel obligated to adopt these constructs. Does this mean they see psychology as having no truth in it? No. It means they feel no obligation to a middle man whose priorities are not the same.Lambert also stresses that counsellors not take the role of physicians and encourages medical examines where appropriate. He does not say that Scripture speaks to every area of life. For example there is no manual in Scripture on how to respond to unfair and unhelpful Amazon reviews, but it does speak to how we can deal with such issues, like speaking the truth in love. These Vine reviewers do not seem to have read carefully, objectively, or even completely (I'm not convinced they all read the whole book). I pray they saw the gospel expounded and applied and are brought nearer to Christ regardless. If you read this book with humble attentiveness, I'm sure you will be sharpened as I was.

Recently, I chose this book as a text book for an undergraduate course in counseling. Each chapter was signed for each week throughout the semester. I can say with confidence the students’ eyes and minds were open to the reality that “counseling is a theological discipline.” Lambert should be commended for taking the theology of biblical counseling into the 21st-century. This book is a must read for any one who desires to council in the church.
