Was disappointed the author felt the need to add dragons, mermaids, aliens... to a book that could have been even better (in my humble opinion) if the little girl was hunting, gathering, collecting while traveling with her family or school or something REAL. Something to spark kids imaginations and make them want to and realize they too can really collect. But this??? Outer space with aliens? Deep sea with mermaids?

Scout is an inquisitive seven-year-old explorer who became hooked on rock collecting when she found an orange rock in her backyard. She searches everywhere for rocks to add to her collection. In this tale, Scout crawls into a dragon’s den to find Azurite, she travels under the sea to extract Fluorite from the bottom of the ocean floor and then zooms into outer space to grab Alexandrite floating around in one of Saturn’s rings. Finally, she explores a collector’s canyon out West to come across a treasure trove of crystals. Wilde describes different methods of removing the minerals and provides details about each type of mineral, its place on the Mohs scale, and the types of tools a geologist uses.The illustrations are vibrant and seem to jump off the page. Scout is an adorable strong-female role model character. Rhymes are crisp, alliteration makes them fun to read out loud. I highly recommend this book to elementary grade children. This book combines a bit of fantasy, an adventure, and a nonfiction story about rocks with a cute narrator to entice readers to come along and learn with her.

Scavenger Scout makes hunting down gems an interactive adventure. My kids were absolutely floored when a gem sticker fell onto their laps (we backed the book on Kickstarter and received a limited edition), and the illustrations are fantastic in the truest sense. If you're looking for a STEM book that closely ties learning with fun, then this book is for you.

I loved reading this book. I like the combination of seek and find with a story to follow as well- that’s something I’ve been looking for in a children’s book. My 2 young girls love the pictures and story! We got the free kindle version and I look forward to the hardback I ordered to see the pictures bigger. Great STEM style writing and action! I learned along with my kids!

This book was such a pleasure to read. Scavenger Scout goes on a rock hunt searching for treasures everywhere. From Dragon caves to the deepest seas, from the driest deserts to outer space, she is deteremined to collect her favorites. The illustrations are colorful and inviting, and do a great job bringing the story to life. I loved the extra facts about rocks and minerals at the back of the book as well. Highly recommended.

Beautiful artwork and informative story about finding rocks mixed with a protagonist that my five year old would find cool all make this a really great children's book!

This book introduces young ones to the delights of mineral collecting. It is a cute short story that shows children 3 of some of the most common, yet beautiful crystals that are a cinch to acquire. Living in Arizona, with a yearly gem & mineral show, helped to expand my own daughter's collection quickly with little cost. This book, although short, is imaginative yet informative.

My kids love books and my kids love rocks. This book is the perfect combination. The illustrations are fantastic and colorful. This is truly a wonderful kids book.
