As a social scientist, economist, or just somebody interested in fashion Entwistle book is an inspiration. The main body of the text is not significantly changed, except from the introduction and the final chapter, but these changes do make a significant difference. Entwistle’s perspective do go against common fashion conceptualization where there is a separation of fashion and cloth, body and mind, society and individual, production and consumption. This is refreshing as she thereby replace the study of fashion (as cloth and adornment) as both a material and social process. In my view she thereby go against the common sociological trend of treating fashion as separate from the actual cloth, the form from the content. As a student of business this is vital, as fashion abstracted from both its content (history of style and costumes) and its form (as a social, economic, material and bodily experience) hardly is usable for thinking about how we do business in fashion and adornments. Highly recommended
Entwistle is incredibly eloquent in her writing. She tackled difficult theories and subject matters, making it very easy for a new student like me to understand (I can read this book on the subway!!)
Great for theory and philosophy of fashion.
I wasn't a huge fan of this text book. I felt like it took a ton of words to provide limited information. It seemed that the author was more interested in writing things in a poetic nature as opposed to informational. I would like to preface that I never had a fashion class before this so that could have attributed to my struggles. I also did not care for the organization of the book.
