Prior to reading this book, my only experience with the legal system was random tv shows: not exactly the preparation I needed for my upcoming lawsuit. In fact, "unprepared" is the only word to describe me at that time I hired a lawyer and had him file a lawsuit - to the point where I was ruining the relationship with my lawyer UNTIL i read this book. Among the many essential facts: In California, a majority of civil lawsuits settle before trial, because after depositions, mediation is most often mandatory. Knowing this well ahead of time (thanks to the book, not because my lawyer told me) has empowered me to prepare in ways that, hopefully, will save me a good deal of legal fees. That's one of the biggest takeaways for me with this book, but there were many other fine points that I needed to understand in order to get the big picture of why the whole process might end up taking much longer that I had hoped.

Having been a legal secretary for 20 years before becoming my own boss for another 20+ years, I thought I knew a lot just from working with lawyers. This book was very informative - a bit repetitive if you read the entire book through - but great if you just want to jump to a particular section like Discovery - my favorite. It appears lawyers do not like Discovery, but to a secretary, it's fun times! (Lots of typing!) Most of what I learned was on-the-job. This book helped me understand more what is "behind the scenes" of a lawyer's life. One thing I never knew - mediation/settlement agreements need to be signed before leaving the mediation.

This easy-to-read book is an absolute necessity to read if you are involved in any way in a lawsuit in California. The authors, who are renowned litigators, explain every step of the litigation process - from the beginning complaint all the way to trial.I really appreciated the examples that were provided in the book for discovery and some examples of how to answer discovery or a complaint. The book drives home how very complex the litigation process is and I don't think any lay person should ever read this book and then assume that they are ready to handle their own case. Just the sections on discovery show how very experienced and knowledgeable you need to be to handle a lawsuit.However, every person who is a party to a lawsuit should read this book so you have a better understanding of what your legal team is doing at each step. Reading this book will help you ask good questions to your attorney and will put him or her on notice that you are an educated person who is involved in the case and has an expectation for top-quality representation. It will also help you understand why the legal bills are so ridiculously high.

The stated purpose of the book is to help the reader get a better understanding about the legal process. As we all know, the more we understand a process the better we can navigate it.The book is structured very much like a lawsuit. Before diving into the ‘meat’ of the book the authors give you an opening argument. Ok not really. They provide a little background of when they got started practicing law and how they see the law as providing guidelines but at the end of the day, it is applied by people. “A lawyer is your guide through the process – not to guarantee success but rather to help you navigate through the chaos.”Most of the book takes the reader on a step by step journey through the litigation process (including the forms you fill out during your lawsuit). I appreciate the way the authors kept the legalese to a minimum but, clearly define and describe the process in laymen’s terms. In a sense, the book reads like an ‘elevator pitch’ where the focus is to describe the process in a short, direct way. The authors do give us a peak at ‘how the sausage is made’ and what we can expect during the legal process without going into an exhaustive review of every single nuance of the process.

This book does a fantastic job of explaining the basics of civil litigation in California. The authors break down many of the nuances to the court system in plain style. The book reads smooth and quickly. Because the authors reiterate important points several times, the reader takes away many salient points on the subject including deadlines, "Dos and Dont's," and the relevance of each phase in the litigation process. If you are unfamiliar with civil litigation in California, this is the book for you.
