Sigh** Dang that was a romance. It just buckles your knees and makes you want to melt to the floor. I had no idea how this author was going to pull off this kind of story, it was so different in execution then any other. I was so nervous! I wanted these two to get together with nail biting need! I was a little worried that finding the right lady for Gent would be tough but Margret was a readers dream leading lady. I loved her. Rebecca is a master at story telling and creating great tension in a romance. Clean with some great kisses.
Margaret Easton has one season left in London to find a husband. Her parents like to travel, and want to go back abroad. The problem is that Margaret hasn't found anyone she likes in London, aside from the mysterious stranger, known as The Gent. When Margaret's parents leave her in the care of a companion taxed with finding Margaret a husband, Margaret finds herself criticized, starved, dressed like a common strumpet, and locked in her room. If she has ever needed a gent in her life, now is the time!I loved this story! I enjoyed Rebecca Connolly's Arrangements series. The Gent was a minor character in a few of those books, and I was so excited to finally get to know the man. This new series, the London League is different because it focuses on a group of men working as spies for the Home Office in London. They have code names and hide their friendship behind sarcasm, but these people have each other's backs. I cannot wait to see more of Cap, Rogue, Hal, and Rook. Margaret and Rafe (The Gent) were perfect for each other. I loved his protectiveness, and how Margaret could handle all of the various people in Rafe's life. She could charm and make anyone feel special. This book had it all: adventure, mystery, wit, and stolen kisses that would make you swoon (if anyone did that these days). I laughed. I blushed (that's my version of swooning). I went back to reread my favorite parts. This is a story that will leave you with a smile on your face, and if you're reading before bed, a few hours less sleep than you intended.Content: clean (some kissing, mild violence, mild language-d and h)
This is my first experience with Ms Connolly's works. She appears to have written many books set slightly earlier and, I think, included many characters from previous stories into this one. This is commonly done but as a reader who jumped into the middle of the author's career, there were far too many previous and upcoming characters who were very obscure and undeveloped to allow me to enjoy this book as a stand-alone. One early chapter felt like I was reading a meaningless list of upcoming spies with kooky names. This book is stuffed with one dimensional, plastic characters. When I pay money and take time to read a novel, I expect that book to be complete and fully developed. I have a major gripe with authors who use the first of a series to set up planned future releases in what amounts to an infomercial. Sometimes this can be done subtly and well... This wasn't.I was intrigued by the basic premise of this Regency spy/suspense storyline. However, the author didn't seem to know how to believably pull the characters and occurrences into this premise. For instance: The parents were developed wrong- wouldn't have left a beloved daughter in such a situation. A sweet, good looking extremely wealthy young woman would have been swamped with suitors, not ignored. She (the h) could have extracted herself from her situation in numerous reasonable ways, especially as a clever, feisty intelligent woman who had significant friends & family in the upper class society. Please note; family and friends realized heiress is being tormented, express their concern, and do nothing!!! The hero had ways to protect her but didn't for no clear reason. What possible reason could the chaperone have for tormenting her 22 yr old heiress?? That was creepy and seemed to be included only to provide a reason to "save" her by the hero. But as a reasonable action on the part of the chaperone it feel flat. Please note; heiress is 22 yrs old and chaperone is the hired help. The author artficially forced both characters and actions into a plot rather than let them grow and flow realistically. I found myself constantly jarred with the complete ridiculousness. Too Stupid to Live does not make a gripping story or meaningful romance especially when some are heroes saving England. The outcome was never in question. The "suspense" was the h in "never would happen" situations and the H never protecting until the last possible, avoidable moment. The banter between the spies was sharp. The epilogue was sweet. The first chapter was cute. The romance is "clean." There was very little attempt at historical interest or accuracy.I
The Regency is my favorite time period, and I love a book with mystery, adventure and romance. The Lady and the Gent has it all!I have read all of Rebecca Connolly’s Arrangement Series novels and the mysterious, heroic and intriguing Gent has shown up previously making me want to read more about him. He did not disappoint. The Gent is just as strong and tough as you would expect him to be, yet he is gentle with children and the heroine Margaret. He keeps an air of mystery but you get to learn more about who he is.“Ten seconds was not enough today. Not nearly enough.â€Margaret and Rafe Thornton (the Gent) have one of the sweetest romances ever. It does seem like their romance develops at a fast pace, yet at the same time it feels like they have known each other longer through their “ten second momentsâ€. I loved the theme of the ten second moments through out the book, especially at the end.The story-line with the gypsies was also very interesting. I hadn’t known a lot about them during this time period and I liked how it showed how they could be misunderstood. This book is clean, however, it does have cursing.I am really looking forward to the next book in the series and hope we will see the Gent again.
