There is a common misconception about books which look good on coffee tables that they must be intellectually deficient and lacking in content. That premise certainly doesn't hold true for this enjoyable publication. Its scope is broad, for it includes information not only on the history of books but also on the evolution of the printing industry, libraries, medieval illumination and modern illustration, the book trade (including book fairs and bookstores), problems with bookworms (genus Anobium , not avid readers), and methods of conservation. The illustrations, most of which are in color, are taken from such sources as Pompeian walls, papyrus scrolls, medieval parchment and vellum manuscripts, woodcuts, frescoes, and panel paintings. If the author errs, it is in trying to present too much information and in sometimes failing to define terms adequately. An absolutely beautiful book , a credit to the Smithsonian, lives up to their high standard. A large and thick and heavy book.

I bought this for a university course. It was quite pricy through the university bookstore, so I was happy to get it at Amazon at such a steal. Especially when it came in the mail. Absolutely gorgeous book with lots of good information. I would recommended it to any book lover, but especially anyone who is interested in books on a scholarly level.

This book was recommended reading for my conservation/preservation library class. It was chosen as it has succinct information that is written in a very accessible format with a ton of color pictures! It is very cool - and makes reading for school fun. Easily will transfer to the coffee table once I have finished it for class. Don't rent - or buy used - purchase new and affix your book plate inside pronto. All of my classmates who rented or bought used are now sad they didn't just buy it new to begin with as it is a treasure. This is required reading for any bibliophile or library advocate.

This is a superbly researched and illustrated book. No obvious flaws and very entertaining. An instant classic from a trusted institutional publisher. If you love books (or even if you are a casual reader) this is a no-brainer must-own.Pros : Excellent content quality. Mostly good quality physical book.Cons : None.

As a lover/collector of books, this was perfect! I thoroughly enjoyed the history and the pictures and would recommend this as a gift for any bibliophile.
