I’m not sure what I expected. Perhaps I was looking for more of the nuts and bolts of music theory along with the “magic formula†to make me into a “composerâ€. There is a little of that in this book. Some rudiments of music theory are covered but a real foundation would be more helpful… as is freely admitted by the authors of this book.Perhaps I was seeking to demystify the essentially mysterious (for me) artistic endeavor of composing music. The authors go a little in this direction also, speaking of sources of inspiration and providing little tidbits such as “Finding Melodies Where You Least Expect Them.â€I was certainly expecting information and “rules of thumb†for the use of chords, tempo progression and the other tools of the trade. That’s definitely in the book and probably the most valuable part for me.Also present is a plethora of information that is only indirectly associate with composition but would be important for a person seeking to make a living in composition. This includes advice on how to solicit venues for performance, copyrights, working with agents, how to produce a “demo†and other such topics.After reading cover to cover, I am no more a composer now than I was when I began. I didn’t really expect the book to provide talent where talent is lacking. I understand a bit more about the process of composition and have learned something of how music theory is applied to composition. For that, I am satisfied. The book was not what I expected but I learned something and that is always worthwhile to me.
Covers a lot of subjects dealing with composition and writing music and songs. They mention that the book doesn't have to be read completely through, but can be devoured in chapters according to the various subjects one is concerned with. Lots of info in this book.
If you don't want to spend a fortune on tuition at a music school and you have the basics of musical knowledge then this book will be a valuable addition to your library; even if you have had courses in composition but have forgotten a lot of stuff such as ranges of instruments and how to transpose for unusual instruments such as alto flute or english horn, this book contains all that information, and you don't have to be a dummy to refer to this information. It is also helpful to have a piano and pencils with erasers.
Clear, concise, salient, but not for dummies. The section on modes was particularly valuable—- something I have learned but now understand.
Good approach to Music Composition. But Tonal Harmony.at $140.00 is much better.
This was a gift to my brother. He read the book and learned to play the piano and keyboards after 50 years of age. This is a good resource book for anyone interested in music.
Great book. Laid out well. Covers all you need to know in a clear, concise manner. Talks about the theory and the craft.
Essential to the Music Composition major. Great guidebook and reference if need be.
