Amazon.com Review
Q & A with Judd Winick, the author of Catwoman Vol. 1: The Game Q: What's it like working on a huge initiative like The New 52? Judd Winick: It was thrilling. Like being given the keys to a spaceship. We were all given the opportunity to go ANYWHERE with the characters. So, we all just strapped in and held on tight. Q: How are you balancing making these stories and characters feel fresh and new while still respecting what came before? JW: It was about making the characters feel present. To tap an old cliché, we are "...standing on the shoulders of giants." There's a reason these characters have been around for so long--they're so rich and strong that they stand the test of time. Our job is to make them a part of the modern world. Q: What would you say defines the character you are working on? JW: Catwoman is a criminal, but she's not a villain. She steals, she breaks the law, but she's got a very specific moral code that drives her. She is by no means a hero. That makes her very different from most of the leads in other books. And, y'know, she's sexy as all heck. Q: What have you thought about the response so far for The New 52 and your title(s) as a whole? JW: With Catwoman we have piqued interests, stirred up trouble, surprised, outraged, drawn people in, and turned the tables on them again. Just like Catwoman would do. Q: What do you think makes the character of Selina Kyle so appealing? Why is she such an integral part of the Batman mythos? JW: Catwoman is the ultimate bad girl. A historic bad girl. She has always represented many layers of trouble for Batman. He's drawn to her, he knows that he should stop her, but ...he can't bring himself to do it. Batman sees himself as an unemotional beast driven by his mission. But there's this woman in the cat suit that just knocks him off his game. And I think part of him likes it.

The best Catwoman comic I've ever read. Judd Winick wrote a thoughtful and complex take on Catwoman. I've always like her character, but many portray her as a one note persona. Winick really dives into her personality, past, and playfulness with a mature and dark portrayal. He develops her world, side characters, style, and voice. Catwoman has a really distinct voice to her in this graphic novel that made it super enjoyable. I would recommend this for old fans and people new to Catwoman's character. The artwork is so lush and detailed with a particularly fashionable style I liked. I hope they continue with this sleek and polished illustrative look. I will pick up Vol. 2 of Catwoman (The New 52).
Catwoman's New 52 reboot starts here with the first six issues of her self-titled series starting from number one! Catwoman runs into some trouble when she steals from a gang that doesn't take too kindly to that and when innocent blood is spilled, she has to take a hard look at what she's doing before others die! Batman makes frequent visits for various reasons and Catwoman is even targeted by dirty cops and their cohort, Reach! So, what we have here is an interesting story by Judd Winick that shows a very sexualized Catwoman character that frequently gets herself into trouble; not far from the character she was pre-New 52. The first couple issues and the very revealing sex scene between her and Batman was a bit much (although could have been much more judging from the storyboard art!) and it has some moments where you're asking yourself, "how the hell!?" like when Catwoman is thrown half a mile into the air and manages to land with little more than a dislocated shoulder. The art by Guillem March is done well and the coloring by Tomeu Morey makes each page splash! Extras include textless covers (and in black and white!) along with cover sketches. Catwoman keeps getting deeper and deeper into a giant mess and she can't seem to claw herself out but that just keeps you turning pages! Overall, a pretty good comic so let's hope volume 2 does just as good!
I absolutely loved this. I prefer a Catwoman with skill and attitude, I like to see her imperfect and get injured (the same way I like my Batman) and this delivered. I liked her sexual affair with the Batman, they have a long history and I didn't find this to lessen her power at all. I also enjoyed the exploration of her teetering between criminal and hero. Her anti-hero status has always appealed to me. She isn't a villain and wasn't presented that way.
It's hot sexy fun...And t is also one heck of a ride. Cardinal hits fast and then stumbles through the entire read in an unorganized chaotic romp that is near impossible to put down. Either through action or emotion Catwoman hooks you in, then jumps off the ledge pulling you down with her.More comics need to be this chaotic, wild, and fun.
My only grip with this is that Catwoman didn't get a hardcover edition that I felt she deserved. This is an amazing Reboot. Catwoman is back in her own standalone series. We get to see inside her head, and be with her during the action. She isn't just a petty thief. This is about a woman who knows what she is good at doing, and mostly ends up doing good things. I know that people have been upset about the first 2 issues in this reboot. There is a love scene(s) in it, and since this is rated T + (The R rating for comic books) its not ment for children. I personally felt that this was a good scene, it summed up her and Batman's relationship in a few panels. Remember the reboot changed the DC universe, now Vertigo titles belong in it, and the time line is all screwed up. We didn't know what her and Batman's realtionship was at. Before the New 52, her and Batman had dated several times, and she knew he was Bruce Wayne. Here we established that she doesn't know that but they do have a "thing for each other". It's interesting, fun, and not for kids. If you like Catwoman you'lll love this. If you are trying to pick up a comic/graphic novel for your child, I'd look for something else. Hope you enjoy reading it when/if you do pick it up! 5/5.-B
I must admit I absolutely hated this the first time I read it. But upon a second read I really started to like it!Winnick does an excellent job of showing her tough yet vulnerable nature and showing her thrill seeking nature. I love how much her relationship with Batman is featured. My biggest complaint is probably the sex with the masks on thing. I just didn't like it at all. It just seemed strange to me.I did however love the conflicted emotions you see between the two of them, especially Batman. You can tell he really has a weak spot for her and he hates himself for it. I enjoyed watching him try to protect her as well.I definitely liked the story and am hoping as it progresses it only gets better!
Opened my eyes to true comic storylines! As a child I never really read comics, i based my knowledge of DC off of the numerous animated tv series of shows. Catwoman Vol. 1 wrapped my mind around the reality that comics can be griddy and eye grabbing. Catwoman's New 52 storyline has grabbed my interest and wanting more! I heavily reccommend this book to anyone considering!
Great art, a great story. Catwoman is a very complicated and nuanced character and this volume captures her tortured past, her femme fatale side, her relationship with batman (very complicated) combined with great art, good story telling and a great niche in Gotham. Cant wait to get to vol 2.
