I'm not the only reviewer to not have a good experience with this hymnal. to be positive: I liked binding and the packaging. The UCC did good there. Some of the services included could be helpful as individual units in planning a service. The little histories of the authors of the lyrics is a plus which I wish all denominational hymnals would copy. The typeset is clear and user-friendly. I also appreciate that The New Century Hymnal was published in a time of great turmoil over inclusive language and is a pioneer in that regard. However...I wish they had invited more poets to the party, more of the "hoi polloi," and had taken their time. The inclusive language is just not...worshipful. Especially with older, better-known hymns. For 2 years I've sung in an UCC choir, and the changes have driven me to distraction. My attitude about it has helped me decide it would be better to sing in the pew, but when "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" ends with: "Glory to the Christ Child," instead of "New-born King," well, my partner and I were "weak and weary".I appreciate the efforts to be inclusive, and I do think that inclusive language is an abiding concern of the Church entire, but as I said, work harder, work smarter.For example, I have heard "Heavenly God (yes, it hurts. it hurts)," so what is wrong with the Inclusive Versions "Heavenly Abba," or "Loving God?" It CAN be done, and in the newer hymns and songs inclusive language can be a plus. But in the older ones? Lightly altered, please. (For example, "Good Christian Friends, Rejoice," has replaced the older exclusive phrasing forever. That is sensitive adaptation.)Well, thanks. This gave me an opportunity to vent. And I hope no one is "Put off" too much by a hymnal which really is the "good old college try." Better luck next time (if indeed there ever are denominational hymnals in the future).

I purchased a copy of The New Century Hymnal and received it very promptly (on a Sunday!). The condition is excellent and appears to have been a gift from a church on the east coast to a friend or parishioner as it has their name embossed on the cover, and a label on the inside with that person's name in calligraphy as a gift from the parish. The identity of the church reveals a lively parish with an excellent webpage.The presence of the person's name on this volume does not present a problem to me as I am utilizing it so far as a reference book as my local United Church of Christ parishes are not using this hymnal at this point. Once they do, I will certainly use this hymnal as it is intended to be used, with the former giftees name on it.

Although this is the same edition as advertised, it is printed on much lower quality paper than the previous ones I ordered from Amazon several years ago. The translucent paper makes the hymns harder to read as the hymn on the opposite side of the page shows through. The hymnals in this new printing are significantly thinner and lighter than the originals, though all of the hymns etc. are included.For those not familiar with the content, the collection of hymns is excellent. Some of the lyrics have been changed a bit too much in order to make all of the language inclusive and gender neutral wherever possible.

New Century HymnalThis product link does not state "large print", so it may not be the exact product that I am reviewing. The description on Amazon poorly represents the actual product of a hardcover hymnal in large print. It turned out to be a ream of paper with only the lyrics in large print, no music score at all, and included a less than 1 inch 3-ring binder (the so-called "hardcover") for the user to insert the selections from the ream of lyrics for the service. I expected to recieve a hymnal like the large print United Methodist Hymnal that truly is a hardcover hymnal with lyrics and music and very little bigger than the standard hymnal. I tried to give this product a 0-star rating, but Amazon requires at least 1 star to pass the edit in this review process.

I was very familiar with this book from church and wanted one to use at home. Not only is it a great source of traditional hymns but also features more modern music useful in a more progressive theology church. The songs are gender inclusive. Each song features a short history. Worship services, worship planning, psalter readings, special services are included. (I purchased a used copy that was advertised as "pew edition" but was actually leather-bound -- a big bonus!)

This an awesome book. I especially like the older written musics,and the ones written by slaves. The transaction was smooth and trouble free.

I listen to the service at home via telephone link. The hymnal allows me to follow along with the congregation. Thanks.
